What Is It

The tuckpointing process begins similarly to pointing, with the removal of old and deteriorated mortar. Colgan employ the latest dust mitigation techniques during the removal of the old mortar joints. However, instead of simply filling the joints with new mortar, tuckpointing involves applying a base layer of mortar that matches the brick colour. Once this base layer is set, a thin line of contrasting mortar called a “fillet”, or the “tuck” is applied on top of the base layer. This fillet or tuck is meticulously aligned to create the appearance of clean, sharp lines between the bricks.
Tuckpointing is often chosen for its visual benefits. It can make older brick structures look more uniform and aesthetically pleasing.

Repointing

Pointing or repointingis the process of renewing the external part of mortar joints in brickwork or stonework. Over time, mortar can deteriorate due to weathering, water infiltration, and the natural aging process. When mortar joints begin to crumble or become loose, it compromises the structural integrity of the brickwork or stonework, potentially leading to more severe damage.

Repointinginvolves removing the damaged or deteriorated mortar and replacing it with fresh mortar, restoring the strength and durability of the brickwork or stonework. Colgan are expert in all forms of repointing including – cut, weathered, struck, and use the latest dust mitigation techniques when removing the old mortar joints.

IMPORTANCE OF THE CORRECT MORTAR

It is critical to repoint with a mortar that closely resembles the composition, strength and colour of the original mortar. In heritage buildings this generally constitutes a lime mortar rather than a hard cement-based mortar which can cause more damage to the surrounding brickwork and doesn’t allow the masonry to sufficiently ‘breathe’. Colgan are highly skilled in this matching process, and can, if required, have the composition of the mortar determined by a scientific laboratory. We use both locally available lime putty and import the highest quality St Astier NHL (Natural Hydraulic Lime) lime from France for our lime mortar mixes.

The Colgan Approach

Whether we’re project managing, or contracting for a specific skill, we take the time to explore the materials to be restored, conserved, remediated or transformed. We work collaboratively with other experts and manage the needs of multiple stakeholders.
